Until Thursday, I hadn’t visited the Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge since they had to remove a lot of pine trees because of a pine beetle infestation. From what I understand, the pine trees really weren’t supposed to be in that area and they plan on letting hardwoods grow up in their place instead of replanting pines. The removal has definitely altered the landscape around Bluebill Pond. Additionally, Snipe Pond is far different from the last time I visited; instead of three ponds separated by dikes, it’s now one pond with half of dike leading into it. As a result, you can’t access the back of Woody Pond from back of Snipe Pond; the best way to get to the back of Woody Pond will probably be by the trail just before you get to Snipe Pond.
