Road Trip Monitoring Report – Charleston, SC, 12 January 2016

Archives

Charleston, SC – I’m spending a few days in Charleston, SC on vacation and of course I’ve brought along some radios. While much of my time will be spent visiting the South Carolina Aquarium, Patriot’s Point, and Fort Sumter, I’ll also be spending some of my time playing radio. I left Savannah around 0800 this morning and arrived at the South Carolina Aquarium parking garage around 1100. It’s worth mentioning that I passed by the Emanuel AME Church where the shootings took place last year; there are still some flower memorials there and it was a bit emotional just passing by. I grabbed some lunch at Ted’s Butcher Block because of the mentions’s I’ve seen in Eugene, AB4UG’s social media; I wasn’t disappointed – I had a wonderful pulled pork sandwich. After lunch, I made my way to the Aquarium; after a tour there I played radio for a bit with the mobile station from the top of the parking garage, it made for a great monitoring spot.

The drive from Savannah to Charleston this morning offered a great variety of listening from both military and public safety sources. The monitoring session from atop the parking garage did as well. Flights from MCAS Beaufort, Shaw AFB, McEntire JNGB, Charleston AFB, and Jacksonville were up and active in the offshore SUAs and MOAs over land. Charleston FD and EMS dispatch offered something interesting to listen to:  all of the initial dispatches are done by an automatic dispatching system with a computerized female voice. After the initial dispatch and the units are on their incident channel, a human dispatcher handles the traffic. I have to admit that it’s a bit odd to listen to.  Below is a cumulative list of frequencies and talkgroups that I’ve monitored so far. I’ll post an update each day I’m here.
