VMFAT-101 at MCAS Beaufort

Archives

200px-VMFAT-101_insigniaSavannahWTOC TV is reporting that VMFAT-101 is at MCAS Beaufort for the next month for training operations. VMFAT-101 is the F/A-18 Hornet Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) for the Marine Corps, which means they train the USMC’s new F/A-18 pilots. The WTOC article indicates that the unit will be doing exactly that through classroom and air training during their visit. The training operations will include Field Carrier Landing Practice (FCLP) as well as training operations with a carrier for the purpose of qualifying the new F/A-18 pilots for carrier landings. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of the training operations incorporate the MCAS Beaufort home squadrons or USAF/ANG in the area.

I haven’t been in town or around the radios for much of the week, but I was in Savannah and Hardeeville yesterday morning but didn’t hear any activity out of MCAS Beaufort, so I don’t have any callsigns (they should use SHOOTER) or frequencies to report yet. I can, however, offer some air traffic control frequencies and training area frequencies to keep an ear on for VMFAT-101 activity:

I haven’t had much radio time lately, but if I’m able to catch any of VMFAT-101’s activity (and I certainly hope to) I’ll post an update.  This will be a great opportunity to catch a unit that we don’t hear much in this area. A quick search of my monitoring notes (which I have going back to 2004) doesn’t show me hearing them before!
