NAS Pensacola Road Trip Monitoring Report; 17 April 2015

Archives

Savannah, GA – Last night, we got back to Savannah after leaving Pensacola, stopping by the Eglin AFB Armament Museum, then continuing on home. It was a long day driving, so I waited until this morning to check the radio recordings. The list below should be the final list of what was heard during the road trip; there are a few corrections from the previous days’ lists. Equipment used was a Uniden HP-1 fed with a Radio Shack mag mount scanner antenna as an improvised mobile scanner and a Uniden BCD436HP handheld.

The week long trip was based out of Pensacola and centered on visiting some of the Gulf area military museums: the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile, and the Air Force Armament Museum at Eglin AFB. All three museums complement each other well, but plan a large chunk of time to visit the National Naval Aviation Museum; it is the biggest of the three and has a huge collection as well as the opportunity to catch a Blue Angels practice during air show season. There’s no way you can go through it in just one day. The Battleship Memorial Park offers tours of the World War II battleship USS Alabama and the World War II submarine USS Drum, as well as other military displays including a nice collection of military aircraft (including some on loan from the National Naval Aviation Museum). The Air Force Armament Museum adds an Air Force touch to things and although it has a nice collection of aircraft, centers on the guns, bombs, rockets, and missiles used by military aircraft. If you’re in the area, try to hit all three. If you’re interested in seeing some of what they have to offer, I wrote a blog post about the museum visits each day:

For anyone interested in listening to Military Aviation communications in the Florida panhandle, I would strongly recommend using more than one radio; trying to do with just one is practically impossible. There is a lot of traffic on the base trunked systems as well as the air traffic control, tactical, and air-to-air frequencies. Using multiple radios will allow you to hear a lot more of what is going on.
