Night Exercise at Hunter AAF

Savannah – Hunter AAF appears to be hosting an exercise consisting of Special Forces aircraft, C-17s, and KC-135s in support.  Last night starting around nightfall, the aircraft began taking off and heading to various locations around the southern half of the state.  Based on what I was hearing, the ultimate destination for many of them was Moody AFB in Valdosta.  Here’s a look at what I caught departing last night:

Participating aircraft that operated out of Hunter included five KC-135s, three MC-130Hs, a MC-130J, five C-17s, three CV-22Bs, and two A-10s.  I also heard an E-3 particpating and while it mentioned a JSTARS aircraft being involved, I didn’t hear it. Many of the larger aircraft were on Mode-S, so for those that like to track tail numbers, here is that information:

AE0688 – KC-135R, 62-3523, 22 ARW (ICON21)
AE12B8 – MC-130H, 88-0193, 15 SOS (MUTT31)
AE12AF – MC-130H, 88-0192, 15 SOS (MUTT 32)
AE1295 – MC-130H, 84-0476, 15 SOS (TALON11 on box, probably MUTT 33 in flight)
AE29D5 – MC-130J, 09-6208, 522 SOS (MUTT34)
AE2FA2 – C-17A, 08-8190, 437/315 AW (MAKER35)
AE4D67 – C-17A, 10-0214, 437/315 AW (MAKER37)
AE1240 – C-17A, 04-4135, 305 AMW (MAKER39)
AE059D – KC-135R, 60-3062, 22 ARW (ICON22)

AE0242 – KC-315T, 58-0065, 22 ARW (ICON24)
AE498C – CV-22B, 08-0038, 20 SOS (00000000)
AE4EEB – CV-22B, 08-0047, 20 SOS (00000047)
AE066E – KC-135R, 62-3569, 22 ARW (ICON23)
AE4ECE – CV-22B, 05-0028, 71 SOS (ARVEL83)
AE2FA3 – C-17A, 08-8191, 437/315 AW (MAKER36)
AE20C4 – C-17A, 07-7183, 437/315 AW (MAKER38)

I’m guessing that this activity will continue at night throughout the week, so if you live around Hunter AAF, don’t be surprised if you hear some noise around dusk as the aircraft leave and in the wee hours of the morning as they return.  If you happen to be close to Moody AFB, you might want to keep an ear out for them and search for some of their operational activity; it’s just a bit too far for my station to catch.
