Savannah Sentry; 07 February 2014

Archives

Brunswick – The Savannah Sentry exercise that began on Monday has continued through the week with air-to-air combat training activity.  F-16s from the 158th FW, F-22s from the 43rd FS, T-38s from the 53rd WEG and 1st FW, and KC-135s from the 92nd ARW and 117th ARW have been operating out of the Combat Readiness Training Center at the Savannah International Airport.  F-15s from the 125th FW at Jacksonville International Airport have participated as well as E-3 from the 963rd ACCS.  Ground Controlled Intercept from NORAD EADS has also been used.  The frequency, callsign, and tail number lists below consist of information from my monitoring efforts as well as monitoring and spotting friends around the area; although they remain anonymous, the information below wouldn’t be possible without their help.

There has been F/A-18 and F-5 activity from MCAS Beaufort and VMFT-401 but so far it has appeared to not be related to Savannah Sentry but rather the usual training operations that VMFT-401 does with the Beaufort squadrons several times a year.  F/A-18s from Beaufort have been using the callsign LATCH while working with the VMFT-401 F-5s using SNIPER.

So far, the Hawaii ANG F-22s haven’t been heard, but their arrival is eagerly anticipated (at least by this hobbyist – I was born in Hawaii and I can’t wait to hear some jets from my home state!).  I am also yet to hear any air-to-ground training activity.  I did hear some JSTARS activity one afternoon but I don’t know if it was exercise related.  Hopefully as the exercise goes on the F-15Es mentioned will show and there will be some Townsend Range activity.  Once that part of the exercise gets underway, two good frequencies to monitor for activity will be 228.400 and 252.900 for Townsend Range Control.
